Muscovies can have a range of colors, but are known for their red head and beak. The Muscovy breed originated in South America. They were brought to Europe in the 1500s by early explorers and later came to the United States. They are a non-migratory bird and require protection from the cold winters of Michigan. The male duck is called a drake and the female is a hen. The hen usually lays 8-16 eggs up to three times per year and nests in a tree hole or hollow. Most ducks grow to around 10-15 pounds. A duck’s diet includes aquatic plants and insects. Around the world, Muscovies are typically bred with Mallards for meat production.
