White-Tailed Deer

  • Lifespan
10-15 years (shorter in the wild)
  • Interesting…A deer’s main defenses are speed and agility.  They can run up to 30 mph and jump up to 10 feet high.

.White-tails are common to Michigan and much of North America.  They are nocturnal (most active at night), and are therefore most often seen at dawn and dusk.  White-tails have a reddish-brown coat in the summer, fading to gray-brown in the winter.  The male is called a buck, the female is a doe, and the baby is a fawn.   Bucks grow a new set of antlers each year.  During the fall mating season, called the rut, bucks become aggressive and use their antlers to protect their territory.  Does give birth to 1-3 fawns each spring.  The fawn’s spotted coat serves as camouflage until they are big enough to escape danger on their own.  Deer are herbivores, eating leaves, grass, corn, and other plants.

Michigan Whitetail

Johnny sezJohnny says: “As the name implies, the underside of the deer’s tail is white.  They will raise their tail when feeling frightened in order to warn other deer.”
